How to Care for Knitwear So It Keeps Its Shape

How to Care for Knitwear So It Keeps Its Shape

A sweater rarely wears out. It loses its shape — the shoulders stretch, the cuffs go slack — and then it looks old long before the yarn gives up. Four habits prevent most of that.

1. Wash less than you think

Knitwear does not need washing after every wear. Air it overnight and it will be ready again. When it does need a wash, follow the care line on the product page: some of our pieces are gentle machine wash cold, others are dry clean recommended.

2. Never hang a heavy knit

A hanger puts the whole weight of the garment on two points at the shoulders. Fold knitwear and store it flat. If you must hang it, use a wide hanger and only for short periods.

3. Dry flat, away from heat

Lay the piece on a towel, reshape it by hand while damp, and leave it away from radiators and direct sun. Tumble drying is what turns a sweater into a smaller sweater.

4. Steam rather than iron

Steam relaxes the fibres and lifts creases without pressing the knit flat. It also refreshes a piece between wears, which is often all it needs.

The exact composition and care instructions for each piece are written on its product page under Fabric & care — worth reading before the first wash rather than after.
